Dolphins, guides for sailors
At the heart of the composition, two dolphins echo each other in a harmonious dance. In ancient Greece, the dolphin was a sacred creature, a symbol of protection and guidance.
Ancient tales recount how it saved endangered sailors, such as the poet Arion, carried to shore after a shipwreck. It also accompanied Poseidon, god of the seas, and appears in the famous Homeric Hymn to Apollo, where the god takes the form of a dolphin to guide Cretan sailors to the future sanctuary of Delphi.
A protector, guide, and companion on journeys, the dolphin here embodies the trust that accompanies travelers. Its presence at the center of the scarf makes it one of the symbolic guardians of this Mediterranean odyssey.
Athena's Aegis
At the heart of the composition, the circular medallion recalls the shape of the Aegis, Athena's famous shield. According to Greek mythology, it bore in its center the head of Medusa, whose gaze had the power to petrify anyone who met it. This representation gave the shield an apotropaic function, intended to ward off evil and protect its bearer.
The Power of Medusa
The flamboyant motifs surrounding the dolphins are inspired by Medusa's serpent hair. Without directly depicting the Gorgon, they evoke her silhouette and recall the protective power attributed to her. This reinterpretation transforms the center of the scarf into a symbolic talisman, where the legacy of Greek mythology is translated into a contemporary ornamental language.
The μάτι: the protective gaze
Present on all four sides of the scarf, the protective gaze is inspired by the μάτι (mati), a symbol deeply rooted in Greek and Mediterranean traditions. For several centuries, it has been associated with protection against the evil eye and forces capable of warding off harmful influences.
